Try to create something very difficult. One of my first creations was a Les Paul guitar. It was very difficult to model because it had many small, detailed pieces like strings, small screws, and pearl inlays. It also had a variety of textures. While trying to make this model I learned a huge amount about the program. It took me about 2 weeks and after I finished I felt as if I had about a year's worth of experience. When you try to do something that is very difficult you tend to rise to the challenge.
