Apparently you can work around the bug by re-pointing normals, and the way that worked for me was suggested by Duncan MacGruer:
Make sure the project window is closed. Convert the mirrored object to a polygon group, ungroup, regroup and THEN convert to mesh. It should repoint all the normals properly.
Chris Tyler mentioned that this bug should be fixed in the next update.
