Sub-D surface modeling is cousin to polygon subdivision modeling in that both use standard polygon cages. The difference is that sub-D surface modeling is a mathematically generated surface based on a lower polygon control cage. It's sort of like NURBS but it's not. Afterwards, you capture and convert the cage to standard polygons to export to your favorite renderer. It is a fantastic way to model.
