We are getting a couple interns in the office this summer. They will be creating 3D models of old spacecraft. We are looking for inexpensive, free modelers that can create reliable OBJ/STL/DAE files for 3D printing. And has tools that are not cryptic and have a decent level of numeric control and readouts.

As much as I love Strata, it's 3D modeler has some serious limitations and quirks that could frustrate a newbee. So anyone have recommendations on a package that focuses on modeling, is cheep or free, and could possibly generate a decent set of UVs as well?
We have been playing with Sketchup (free version), so far not that impressed.

Blender. It's free. Used by tons of beginner to expert modelers.

Yeah can second MacSavers modeling in Blender is the way to go, perhaps Cheetah 3D for a small price.
Alternatively Autodesk has 123D a free modeller but looks like is not any longer offered after April 2017.
SketchUp is not suitable for the kind of model you're looking for.
I would suggest Blender even if your interim they never touched, there's plenty of good resources to get up and running.

There's also a ton of videos on YouTube to get you up and running pretty quick on Blender.

On the Mac side there is Cheetah 3d. Wings 3d or MOI3d_nurbs.

I definitely understand that Modo is not specifically in the cheapest software category, but modeling in Modo is an absolute pleasure... it's just so nice for poly modeling.

Modo has probably one of the best poly modelers out there. It has a steep learning curve in general. It isn't cheap but for all it does it is fair market price for a professional software of its kind.
