Any suggestions on how to soften the shadow edge on a sphere? This has always been something I struggle with. Using traditional point light or the global lights, I always get a hard line. Using the HDRI Light dome sort of works, but the illumination is not strong enough.

With atmosphere object.

Disable Shadow Casting for the atmosphere object in Instance Properties menu (Edit>Instance Properties).
Left side fill light set to 3% intensity, no shadows, so the dark side isn't just black.

I used the default "Earth Like" texture map on the globe and Mist-Dispersing texture for the cloud layer.

Not sure why you're getting the waveform distortion along the shadow line. It should be an arc, not a wave.

Thank you for your suggestion, that helped a lot. Still not perfect, as the lack of a shadow property on the atmosphere object seems to let light effect the atmosphere on the shadow side. So it is still unrealistic, but much better.

You're welcome.
Are you using a Mist shader for the clouds? Try reducing the brightness of the ambient property.

I am using the Mist texture, already set the ambient to 0. The Clouds are a texture image, so not involved with this problem. So it appears I can have nice planet shadowing or nice atmosphere shadowing, but not both...

Interesting, the use of a HDRI lightsome kills the Mist Atmosphere glow altogether...
