What is really the difference between working with the Plugins in Photoshop, and having the Stand-alone Strata software? The plugins are cheaper, only ($250), the Stand-alone software is $500. Can you do the same things with the plugins as with the Stand-alone?
Thanks for your help and suggestions!
I have to decide what to buy:-)

Hi Peter.
In a nutshell, the full applications are more powerful and the plug-ins tie into Photoshop much better.
A future version of Strata 3D CX will have the Design 3D[in] plug-in features - but as of now, in order to get all those great direct tie-in features to Photoshop CS3 Extended you need Design 3D[in].
If you're a big-time Photoshop user you can't go wrong with the plug-ins. And we'll provide an upgrade path the full applications. However, if you need any of the higher level modeling functions (for example) you may want to get CX. The full Foto 3D application allows you to create higher detailed models. Live 3D gives you full access to the interactive scripting functions which are not included with the Live 3D[in] plug-ins.

BTW., it seems that Strata Design 3D [in] is Quad-enabled by default, means it renders with 4 cpus / cores if available. Nice. Is that the case with the upcoming CX 5.5, too???

you must add $999 to the $250 for photoshop CS3 extended. Or $349 for an upgrade if you already own CS3.
For europeans the CS3 expensive price ranges from 1613,40 euros for a full version and 656 euros for an upgrades. (prices from adobe web site after swithing from US to an european country)
A shame we have to pay so much more in europe. If you're european and can use english softwares, try to buy an US version instead of a localized one.
