It seems like many of the models I've created in CX5 will not import into the Design3D(in) plugins. What are the incompatibilities I should look for and how can I clean these models up so they work? Will the upgrade to CX5.5 address this?
We are working on a list comparing the features between the Design 3D[in] and the CX 5 program which will help with this kind of thing. It will be posted on the web site and probably here on the Cafe as well once it is finished. For now, look at the Extensions Palette in both programs.
Basically any tool not in D3D which was used to create a model in CX will prevent that model from opening in D3D. Try Converting objects in the model to Polygon Mesh objects in CX and they should then come into D3D.

Hi is it possible to export the camera positon and plane from the pluggin to CX5, to get the added features of CX with the conveinience of the plane using vanishing point created with the pluggin? Also in future upgrades of CX will it have the vanishing point function built in?
Right now there is not since the models from D3D are not compatible with CX 5. The planes are part of the reason why they are not compatible, changes had to be made to the model files for D3D to handle them and CX 5 doesn't have those changes yet.
The Vanishing Point function is a Photoshop feature, it does not come from Strata.
